Club History |
Hillgate Boys Football Club was formed in the summer of 1982, after five young boys approached our chairman Eddie Whittle and asked him if he would take them into a 5-a-side football competition, which was organised by the local police at Jackson Lane Recreation Centre in Bramhall.
After a number of competitions and friendly matches, Eddie entered the newly formed under 12’s team into the Stockport Metro Junior Football League in 1983 and winning the ‘Metro Sportsmanship Trophy’ in their first season. After joining the SMJFL, it took Hillgate Boys team one and a half seasons to win their first match, which was 9-2 against Mountfield Rovers.
This was deemed such a victory that it featured on the back page of the Stockport Express news paper!
Between 1984-86 the team won more games and in 1985 the club ventured on their first ever trip to another country playing in a football tournament at Rhyl in Wales.
In 1987, a second team was formed at under 12’s age group and within a couple of seasons, the two teams managed to finish runners-up in their respective leagues. Also, the club entered into the Ayrshire Easter Football competition in Scotland.
During the 1988/89 season the club won the local Devonshire Cup competition which was played from Saturday to Monday at Banks Lane recreation grounds.
In 1991/92, Hillgate Boys formed a third team at the under 11’s age group and this was to become known as ‘The Dream Team’. This team won their first league title in this season and won the Manx Cup in the Isle of Mann. For the next two seasons, this team won two Stockport Knock-out Cup titles and every local cup tournament including the prestige Stockport Junior Blues competition. They also won the Brandenburg cup in Belgium. But due to the teams success, seven players where scouted and taken to the likes of Manchester United, Manchester City and Oldham and unfortunately, the Dream Team was broken up.
At the start of the 1993/94 season Hillgate Boys had expanded with teams from the under 9’s to under 17’s age groups playing junior football in Stockport. In this season, the club colours changed from the Yellow jersey, Green shorts and Yellow socks to the current club strip of Blue and White striped jersey, Blue shorts and Blue socks. Also, this was the season that the club introduced a 50p fine for any player who turned up in dirty boots and is still up standing today!
In 1995, Hillgate Boys saw a Hillgate Boys player sign a professional contract with Stockport County and since then, the club has produced numerous players that have signed professional and semi-professional football contracts.
Throughout the years Hillgate Boys have continued to provide football to thousands of youngsters in Stockport and continued their success by winning league titles and cup competition at all age groups from under 9’s to under 17’s.
In the 2003/04 season the Hillgate Boys under 16’s team became one of the only local teams to win the esteem UMBRO CUP, which is seen a junior world cup as teams from all over the world participate in the competition.
In 2005, Hillgate Boys formed a Girls football team, who play as ‘Hillgate Blues’ and are playing in the South Manchester Girls Football League. In its 25 year history, the club is very proud in the fact that it has taken teams of youngsters to football competitions and tournaments in England, Scotland, Wales, Isle of Mann, Spain, Italy, Belgium, France and Holland.
Due to the continued success of the club, a number of the Hillgate Boys managers have been selected to coach the Stockport Metro Inter-league teams, which are made up of the best players who play in the Stockport Metro Junior Football League and winning major inter-continental cups in Europe.
Hillgate Boys and Hillgate Blues also regularly raise money for charity and good causes within the local community.
